Selena Quintanilla Perez’s star power still burns bright. The Tejano singer broke barriers in the male dominated music scene and gave a generation of Mexican-Americans confidence in their heritage. With over 3.5 million likes on her Facebook page and numerous artists naming her a role model, her influence is still widely felt to this day.
Now, Netflix has announced a new series based on the late singer’s life and, if we’re being honest, it’ll probably take over our lives as well. Let’s face it, no gift has ever had more use than that $7 dvd you got in a Walmart discount bin for your tía. So get ready to rearrange your calendar to binge the show or face being ostracized at the next carne asada.
Quick disclaimer. We know J-Lo would still slay the role if given to her, but we’ll let the next generation of stars take a shot.
Here are some celebs we think will do the generational talent justice.
Selena Gomez
What all do Selena Gomez and Selena Quintanilla Perez have in common? They were both born in Texas. They’re both talented singers with massively successful music careers. Plus, THEY HAVE THE SAME FREAKING FIRST NAME. This is a no brainer.
Demi Lovato
Alright so let’s say Selena Gomez is busy buying her fifth house in the Hollywood Hills and can’t do the role. Why not ask her childhood friend and chart topping pop artist Demi Lovato? The second Disney Channel alum is an accomplished artist and philanthropist, just like our heroine. There’s no doubt she could take on this role. Also in case you were concerned, this is the last person on this list coming off the line from the Disney factory.
Camila Cabello
The X Factor breakout is one of the most sought after bilingual artists working today. She’s coming off the best selling song of 2018 (Havana), amassing a fresh legion of over 30 million Instagram followers. Also, she just paid tribute to everyone’s favorite Tejano singer at the famed Houston Rodeo this year.
Becky G
Just 22 years old and taking over the charts, Becky G could be the fresh face to fill this role. Also just like Selena, Becky is no stranger to the grind of reaching stardom. She’s been booking acting and singing gigs since she was 9 years old to help support her family. That some Selena-type hustle if you ask me.
Cardi B
Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar is the hottest artist in hip-hop. Since her breakthrough banger Bodak Yellow, she’s taken the throne and has ruled with an acrylic-nailed fist since. Whether it’d be an accurate portrayal or not, it would undoubtedly be one of the most entertaining.
Bonus: Meryl Streep
I mean, is there anything she can’t do?
